Course Length:  One Year

Prerequisites:  None

Materials and Fee: Each student needs to purchase one "Flash Drive/Thumb Drive" and pay a $10 class fee.  The Flash Drive can be purchased at most electronics stores.  The type of flash drive you need to purchase is a "San Disk 1.0 Gigabyte drive".  The "Thumb Drive" will cost about $20.  

Course Outline:  This course will explore the computer as a creative medium.  Students will develop production skills while using a variety of graphics programs on a Macintosh computer. Software programs such as Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, InDesign, FlashMX, GoLive, and other professional graphic design programs are covered. Assignments are designed to give students the ability to explore the pre-computer graphic design.  Students will create designs by hand and then take their designs and explore the capabilities of the professional software programs.

Classroom Expectations:

  • Come to class ready to learn and work.  Be prepared!

  • An open mind and a positive attitude are important to be a success in an art classroom, so that you can expand your artistic abilities.
  • Your computer equipment and materials must be handled with care.
  • You must maintain a clean work area, and classroom.  Trash around your work area and classroom will be picked up daily or your class won’t be excused.
  • If you are absent for any reason it is your responsibility to make up the class work on your own time.
  • Get to class on time!!!  If you are outside of the classroom when the bell rings then you will be marked tardy.  Take care of your personal business before class or after class, (that means using the bathroom, talking to friends, eating a snack, going to your locker). I mark all tardies.  If you are tardy 15 minutes after the bell rings it becomes an absence.
  • Turn cell phones off, and keep them in your backpack. Do not have any games or other electronic devices in my class or I will take them.  You can pick it up in the office after school.
  • Conduct yourself appropriately during class.  Bad language will not be tolerated.
  • No unwanted physical contact between students.  Physical and Sexual abuse by a student in my classroom will be reported to the Milpitas Police Department and the Milpitas High School Administration..

School Rules: 

  • All teachers will have students check, put away, and turn off all electronic devices at the beginning of each class.

  • All students will have a daily planner to write all homework assignments, and MHS Teachers will check them daily.

Grading & Attendance Procedure:

Grading, absences, tardies, and cuts procedures are in accordance with school policy.

Each assignment will be taught to the California State Standards.  The students will learn and understand how the assignment meets these requirements.

Each project will be graded according to:

  • The difficulty of the assignment.

  • Solving and understanding the problems of the assignment.
  • Effective use of the computer and your time.
  • Commitment & Effort.
  • Craftsmanship.
  • Meeting the deadline.
  • Classroom Behavior

Grade Value Scale:

100% - 91% = A

  90% - 81% = B

  80% - 71% = C

  70% - 61% = D

  60% -   0% = F

Late Projects will be graded down 25% from their original score.  Missing a due date in the business world will have serious consequences on your job, you will need to be responsible and have your work ready when the client/teacher is expecting to have it completed.  One of the goals in this class is to give the students real world experience they can take with them to a real job.
